About Us
Skowhegan Area Middle School is located in Somerset county. The school
is home to approximately 580 7/8 grade students from Skowhegan, Mercer,
Norridgewock, Smithfield, Cornville, and Canaan. S.A.M.S. is divided
into six small communities.

We are members of the Elm Community who, with the
guidance of our teacher, Ms. Badershall,  have taken on the added
responsibility of an additional science class devoted to lake ecology.

Our Lake
Our chosen lake of study is Lake Wesserunsett. It lies 4 miles
northwest of Skowhegan in nearby Madison. It is part of the Kennebec
Watershed. The lake offers residents and visitors multiple recreational
activities such as boating, swimming, and year round fishing. There are
approximately 200 property owners surrounding its waters.

Lake Wesserunsett is probably best known for being
the home of Lakewood Theater. The Lakewood Resort and Inn opened as
America's first summer theater in 1901. It served as a tryout location
for many productions destined for Broadway. Steam powered passenger
boats would connect with trolley cars in nearby towns to bring visitors
to the resort which offered recreation, camping, and tourist bungalows
in addition to the theater. The Maine State Legislature designated
Lakewood as the State Theater of Maine in 1967. Summer visitors to
Lakewood can still catch a show, enjoy fine dining, or play a round of
golf on the shores of this state treasure.

We will be looking at other area lakes as the project continues.
