Aquatic plants in Moosehead lake

Moosehead lake is called an oligotrophic lake, which means that there are not a lot of aquatic plants, but we found some important ones. Volvox, Lily Pads, and Duckweed.

Volvox

Volvox is a spinning colony of bright green cells. A colony of volvox may have over 500 cells. The large colonies can grow about 1 mm in diameter and you can see them with a naked eye.

Duckweed

Duckweed underwater is a purplish color, but out of water it is green. Duckweed can produce 10 tons of protein per hectare per year.
The things that eat duckweed are chickens, ducks, and pigs and can supply protein for them. This plant is the fastest growing multi-cellular plant. Duckweed can clean waste by removing organic and inorganic nitrogen.
